The iPhone 3GS was the successor to the iPhone 3. Apple launched this phone in a 16GB and a 32 GB version – yes, 32GB, a size that raised eyebrows everywhere during its release in the summer of 2009 because most people were still using desktop PCs and laptops which had a hard disc drive capacity of around 20GB at the time. So, when the world learned that the latest iPhone had 32GB of space on it, jaws were dropping all over the planet!
However, at the time of the release the iPhone 3GS did not sell as well as the manufacturer had hoped. Sure, there were queues waiting outside all the major Apple stores and the registered outlets permitted to sell the phone but once the midnight fanatics had their hands on this phone, follow up sales were poor.
It may well have been the price, particularly the 32GB version, that was putting folk off but a year later in the summer of 2010, Apple released another version of the iPhone 3GS, only this one had just 8GB of space. Still that is more than plenty of space for anyone using the phone to store pictures, songs and text messages dating back to the day when you first bought your phone.
Also launched at the same time as the 3GS 8GB version was the new iPhone 4, but more about that phone later. Among the improvements we witnessed here with the iPhone 3GS, were the 3.2 mega-pixel camera. Many cameras that were on the market (digital cameras) were banging out 2, 3 or 4 megapixels, so it was great to see a phone which could make calls, send SMS text messages, surf the internet, shoot video and take a great picture too.
Out of all the iPhones ever released, the iPhone 3GS was longest in production (so far). When it was first released in July and August of 2009 in the 16GB and 32 GB versions, it continued producing the 8GB version a year later and the smaller version carried on being produced right up until August 2012.
In fact, the 3GS 8GB version was still running off the shelves and being produced for a good year after the successor – the iPhone 4 was released and only finally stopped being produced once Apple announced the release of the iPhone 5. Users of the 3GS noticed must faster speeds on all its apps too.
